Films by Fred Ivey

Below are a small selection of films shot by railway photographer Fred Ivey. Most of the videos here date from the 1990s when Fred used Hi8 video cameras. He had more than one as he would wear them out pretty quickly. Over sixty videos compiled from Fred Ivey's extensive archive are posted on YouTube.

British Railways

35028 and 30053 at Waterloo and Clapham Junction 26 March 1995 - At the end of a rail tour 35028 and 30053 were filmed by Fred Ivey at Waterloo and shunting at Clapham Junction. Class 47767 has a supporting role. [Watch]

47703 shunting at Andover - On June 14th 1995 Waterman Rail class 47 47703 "Lewis Carroll" arrives at Andover station with 3 CIG EMUs, shunts them and then leaves with them bound for Ludgershall. [Watch]

Barnetby June 1995 - Passenger (class 150 and 158) and freight trains (class 56 and 60) as filmed by Fred Ivey on June 10th 1995 [Watch]

Black Five 44767 at St Pancras and West Ruislip - On March 25th 1995 Fred Ivey was not only at St Pancras to record the arrival of 44767 George Stephenson with "The Palentine" special but also later that evening Fred recorded the loco's arrival at West Ruislip. St Pancras has changed somewhat since this film was shot! [Watch]

Hayes Branch - On March 9th 1995 Fred Ivey took a trip on EPB stock from Hayes to London. This is his record of that journey. Note the junction at Elmers End for the Woodside and Addiscombe branch. All now history. [Watch]

Holyhead and Bangor September 1995 - Regional Railways operated mark two sets with class 31 and 37 lcoc on services between Crewe and Holyhead. In this film 31465, 37414 are seen at Holyhead and 31421 and 37420 in Bangor. [Watch]

Kensington Olympia Summer 1994 - London's Kensington Olympia station on the West London Line is a good place to spend summer days watching trains . Fred caught on camera the "Haggis Belle", Class 73 E6003 "Sir Herbert Walker" with a special, Eurostar, the VSOE, New "Networkers" being delivered, and lots more. [Watch]

Lincoln Central Station - Filmed in 1992 when semaphore signals abounded. [Watch]

Orient Express and other trains at Wandsworth Road - Here Fred captures the VSOE (Orient Express) twice. First hauled by 47766 on March 16th 1995 and two days later hauled by 35028 "Clan Line". Also featured is E6003 "Sir Herbert Walker", class 60s on engineers trains and class 47 hauling freight trains. [Watch] [Buy]

Orient Express arrives and departs London Victoria - On September 25th 1994 Fred Ivey filmed 73199 bring the VSOE into Victoria station and 73107 depart with the train. [Watch]

St Pancras October 1991 diversion - Work on the West Coast Main Line upgrade resulted in weekend diversion of trains to St Pancras. Class 47 s hauled trains complete with their class 87 locomotives between Nuneaton and Bedford where they could run under the wires to St Pancras. [Watch]

Vintage Electric at Mistley - Fred was at Mistley Station on the Harwich branch just as a class 312 EMU passed a class 306 EMU that had strayed well away from its usual haunt. June 15th 1996. [Watch]

Steam Specials at Bishops Stortford with 70000, 60007 and 60009 - June 25th 1995 was a sunny summer day, perfect for watching the steam specials hauled by 70000 Britannia, 60009 Sir Nigel Gresley and 60007 Union of South Africa. The weather was also ideal for track side fires. [Watch]

Waterloo and City Line - Filmed on 28th May 1993, the last day of Bullied designed rolling stock which had operated Drain since 1940. [Watch]

Weymouth Harbour Branch - On December 29th 1994 33109 Capt. Bill Smith RN took the Ocean Liner Express along the Weymouth Quay line much to the surprise of motorists, especially those who had their cars moved and even towed away. [Watch]

London Underground

92 stock and 67 tube stock in an unsual location - August 1994 and Fred Ivey's camera catches 67 tube stock in an unusual location. [Watch]

A Stock on the East London Line part 1 (Shoreditch to Rotherhithe) - On March 24th 1995 Fred Ivey filmed the running of A stock trains on London's East London Line. This was the last day of operation before the line was closed for modernisation and the construction of Canada Water station. Since then the line has closed again and will finally reopen as part of TfL's Overground network. [Watch]

A Stock on the East London Line part 2 (Surrey Quays to New Cross and New Cross Gate) - On March 24th 1995 Fred Ivey filmed the running of A stock trains on London's East London Line. This was the last day of operation before the line was closed for modernisation and the construction of Canada Water station. Central Line Last 62 stock train - On February 17th 1995 Fred Ivey took his camera with him when he travelled on the last 62 stock train from West Ruislip. [Watch]

Gauging Train on the Met - On October 6th 1994 Fred's camera caught sight of a gauging train on the Metropolitan Line. It consists of two battery locomotives a brake van and a flat wagon with the gauge profile built onto a frame. [Watch]

Metro Rover - On February 5th 1995 metropolitan Loco No 12 Sarah Siddons hauled "Metro Rover" around the Metropolitan Line. Fred dashed around with his camera and caught the train at Neasden, North Harrow, Ruislip Manor, Harrow on the Hill, Rickmansworth and Baker Street [Watch]

Piccadilly Line Aldwych Branch - September 30th 1994 was the last day for operation of the Aldwych branch from Holborn . This was the shortest line on the London Underground system and its not at all clear why the branch was built, with two lines and platforms ( although it operated only one train for most of its life). [Watch]

Ongar - The last month - Filmed in the final month of operation (September 1994) of the Ongar branch Fred's camera catches the rural quiet of the line while following 62 stock unit no 1510 and then he spends time at Epping watching 1960 stock working the branch. [Watch]

Steam on the Met 1994 Part 1 - BR standard 80079 and 69523 Great Central N2 tank are seen from Roxborough Road bridge making a parallel departure on 18th May. That evening they are caught at Rickmansworth. and Wembley Park. Bubble car L124 makes gauging runs on the Chesham branch on 19th May. Ex GWR Pannier L99 hauls a schools special from Amersham on 20 May. [Watch]

Steam on the Met 1994 Part 2 - Class 47 No 47085 arrives at Rickmansworth with Shenfield EMU 017 on 21 May. It is shunted into place by two battery locos. Next morning 80079 and 69523 are seen at Wembley Park bringing their trains into service from Neaden depot. The underpass gradient was not designed for steam traction. In support are BR English Electric Diesel 20227 and Met electric loco No 12 Sarah Siddons [Watch]

Steam on the Met 1994 Part 3 - 21 May 1994 Steam provided by GCR N2 69523, ex GWR pannier tank L99 and BR standard tank 80079 supported by Met electric loco No 12 "Sarah Siddons", Class 20 No 20227. "Bubble" car L124 works the Chesham shuttle [Watch]

Steam on the Met 1994 Part 4 - 28 May scenes at Chorleywood, Wembley Park, Croxley, Uxbridge and Ruislip Manor with 69523, 80079 and L99 providing the steam power. [Watch]

Other Railways

Post Office Railway - Now mothballed, is the Post Office's underground automated railway that served central London postal sorting offices and railway stations at Paddington and Liverpool Street. Fred filmed the railway in operation during aa London Underground Railway Society visit in 1993. [Watch]

LSWR B4 Normandy hauls a works train on the Bluebell Railway - Building the extension of the Bluebell Railway from Horsted Keynes to Kingscote usually involved LSWR B4 dock tank "Normandy". This video shot on January 19th 1994 shows Normandy take a bogie bolster loaded with rails and a brake van to the work site. The engine runs round the train at New Coombe Bridge, at that time the limit of passenger services. [Watch]

Trip by Wickham trolley on the Bluebell Railway extension 19 Jan 1994 - This video was filmed by Fred Ivey when work laying the extension of the Bluebell Railway was making progress towards Kingscote from New Coombe Bridge in January 1994. The trolley takes the Wednesday extension gang back to Horsted Keynes for lunch. They returned to the work site behind Adams B4 dock tank "Normandy" but that is the subject of another video. [Watch]

Road Haulage

Allelys haul prototype 56 stock cars from Upminster to Newmarket - ON April 28th 1994 four 1956 stock cars damaged in shunting were taken to the scrapper by road from Upminster depot. Allelys, who specialise in hauling railway rolling stock performed the move and Fred Ivey was there to record the event. [Watch]
