Richard Wagner (1813-1883)

Wagner considered himself the most Germen of men and his operas reflet that view. Unlike most compsers Wagner wrote both words and music. One of Wagner's sources of inspiration was Mathilde Wesendonk. Wagner lived on the Wesendonk estate outside Zurich and became infatuated Otto Wesendonk's wife Mathide. Though Mathilde seems to have returned some of his affections, she had no intention of jeopardising her marriage, and kept her husband informed of her contacts with Wagner. Nevertheless, the affair inspired Wagner to put aside his work on the Ring cycle and began work on Tristan und Isolde, based on the Arthurian love story. The Wesendonk Lieder are five songs set to poems written by Mathilde. The uneasy affair collapsed in 1858.
