Extra Tracks
Below are tracks from our library that never made
it onto one of our compact discs. They can be
downloaded here as high quality 320kbs AAC encoded
(MP3) files. Those originating on 78rpm discs are
raw and no attempt to clean up the surface noise
had been made although we have removed some loud
cracks and bangs. Please note the previews are
compressed files so the sound is not as good as
that on the whole track.
Purchasers of tracks have unlimted personal use
but must not pass or sell on to third parties nor
broadcast without prior permission from PPL
Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff (1873 -1944)
Rachmaninoff was one of the finest pianists of his day and, as a composer, very nearly the last great representative of Russian late Romanticism in classical music. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917 Rachmaninoff emigrated to the USA where he spent much of the rest of his life giving concerts. His last recital, given on 17 February 1943 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, included Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2, which contains the famous Marche funebre (Funeral March). This sonata had been a favourite for Rchamaninoff throughout his concert career. Rachmaninoff's large hands enabled him to play stride piano, but only in private. He was an admirer and friend of Fats Waller.
