Herbert von Karajan (1908 – 1989)

Herbert von Karajan was the son of an upper-middle class Salzburg family. He was a child prodigy as a pianist but when he studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, he was encouraged to concentrate on conducting by his teacher. In 1955 he was appointed music director for life of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
