Edward Elgar (1857-1934)
Elgar was a self taught jobbing composer based in Worcester. His music became popular in germany before spreading around the musical world. His muse was Alice, his wife and after her death compositions came only rarely and with much effort. The unique colour of his music reflected the English middle classes of his time although there are moments of anger and passion in his music not associated with an English gentleman who preferred visits to the race course to composing.
