Sir John Barbirolli (1899-1970)

Affectionately known as Glorious John , Barbiroll was a cellist and conductor. For much of his career he was associated with the Hallé Orchestra, Manchester. He had been music director of the New York Philharmonic in the 1930s and towards the end of his career was the director of the Houston Symphony Orchestra. He was particularly associated with the music of English composers such as Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams. He also developed a strong reputation as a conductor of the music of Gustav Mahler.
